PPJ 004: Meet Lisa Duez!

On this episode of the Private Practice Journeys podcast, Lisa Duez, a licensed clinical social worker, discusses how she got involved in the helping profession, why she decided to go into private practice and what she did to prepare herself to “take the plunge.” Give it a listen and find out why you’ll want to follow these therapists on their journeys!  https://youtu.be/ir5SgxKMjwk

Learning Along the Journey

* Advantages of private practice – having control over your own schedule and who you work with; no one dictates how much money you make; following your heart’s desire.

* Challenges in transitioning from administrative to clinical role – learning how to “do the business” of private practice (e.g., how to get paid, etc.); learning what to do with clients after having been out of clinical work for a while.

* “Trust the process” is an important part of the therapy process.

* Preparing for private practice – completing the paperwork to be a LLC; learning how to work differently & market.

* “What can I do today to grow?”

* Knowing that some days will not be good while other days will be good is part and parcel to starting a private practice.

* Thoughts that might go through your head when starting a private practice – “What if no one shows up? What if they show up for a session and see me as a fraud? What happens if I can’t help a client?”

* If you have a goal to start a private practice then it’s never too late to start!
