Learning Along the Journey

* Learning by doing: One of the challenges in starting a private practice is learning how to use an electronic health records system. Cindy is learning to use Simple Practice. Stripe, which is a credit card processing service, integrates with Simple Practice.

* Learning from experience: Private practice Facebook groups (e.g., Private Practice Journeys Community; Selling the Couch) provide an important source of support when starting a private practice.

* Learning to market: Networking – one-one-one coffee and lunch dates are a good way to develop referral sources.

* Getting to the know the other person (that you are taking out for coffee or lunch) as a person is an important part of developing referral relationships. Then you can discuss your respective businesses/how you can help one another/serve as one another’s referral sources. Collaborating with other therapists is a good way of developing professional relationships.

* Learning about finances: Meeting with an accountant to learn how to keep track of expenses and write-offs for tax purposes is important. A zero-interest credit card might be necessary to make purchases when starting a practice.

* Learning about yourself: Being a perfectionist can hold you back/make you feel like you’re not ready to do something and subsequently prevent you from moving forward.

* Learning and wisdom: Advice regarding taking the plunge into private practice – “Jump before you’re ready” because you’re never going to feel as though you’re completely ready.
