PPJ 007: Amanda Petrik – Private Practice Journey Discoveries in February ‘17!

On this episode of the Private Practice Journeys podcast, Amanda Petrik, a licensed clinical professional counselor, discusses what new and exciting things have happened since starting her practice last month. Give it a listen and find out why you’ll want to follow these therapists on their journeys into private practice!  https://youtu.be/n8m90Ng4N8g

Learning Along the Journey

* Learning by doing: Amanda is learning how to do her own billing so as not to pay a billing service to do this for her. She has chosen Simple Practice as her electronic billing software and has found it to be very easy to use. It has saved her a lot of time. It is important to look at how you are using your time given that time is money. Simple Practice is a subscription based practice management system.

* Learning from experience: Amanda has learned how to get clients to schedule appointments during the morning and early afternoon as mid to late afternoon appointments are popular. Amanda had been asking clients, “What days and times would work best for you?” and has changed this to “These are the days and times that I have available” so they work around her schedule.

* Learning to market: Think of marketing as building connections. Amanda sent letters to doctors in the community notifying them of her practice. She has also e-mailed therapists that she did not know and introduced herself to them. Amanda personalized the letters with the message “How can I be of service to you and your clients?” She is also considering using Facebook ads and contacting the local newspaper to see if she can write a mental health column for them.

* Learning about finances: It is much easier to collect fees from clients in person than billing for them later.

* Learning about yourself: Amanda is starting to see herself as a businesswoman and entrepreneur based on tasks she has taken on such as marketing and billing.

* Learning and wisdom: Therapists can benefit from creating a business plan if they are thinking of going into private practice.
