PPJ 012: Lisa Duez – Private Practice Journey Discoveries this Month!

On this episode of the Private Practice Journeys podcast, Lisa Duez, a licensed clinical social worker, discusses what new and exciting things have happened in her practice since last month. Give it a listen and find out why you’ll want to follow these therapists on their journeys into private practice! https://youtu.be/nQKX_Q3kqf0

Learning Along the Journey

* Learning to manage time – Lisa has learned not to allow her business activities to bleed over into her weekends. Working smarter and not harder is key. Also, learning how to work within time frames is important.

* Learning to develop successful habits – Lisa has found that being disciplined is her most important habit as a private practice owner. Making “to-do” lists and prioritizing activities are also important habits.

* Learning how to care for yourself – Lisa journals, exercises and does things that are fun (e.g., goes to kids’ games) as forms of self-care. Making the business work for the life instead of the life working for the business should be kept in mind.

* Learning about private practice and personal relationships – Lisa’s husband has been very supportive of her plunge into private practice. His primary concern is when and how Lisa will be paid. Knowing that the financial part of the practice becomes more stable over time is helpful. It is important to keep your spouse/partner/family “in the loop” from the initial conversations of starting a practice to actually launching the practice.

* Learning to develop a private practice mindset/identity – Lisa noted that it is a process for her to change her mindset as social worker – who was trained to work with the poor/disenfranchised – to a for-profit business owner. Telling yourself that you are the provider of the service who is worth money and that people come and pay you so you can keep running the business is key. Managing feelings of vulnerability is something that new private practitioners contend with.
