PPJ 016: Lisa Duez – Private Practice Journey Discoveries this Month!

On this episode of the Private Practice Journeys podcast, Lisa Duez, a licensed clinical social worker, discusses what new and exciting things have happened in her practice since last month.  Give it a listen and find out why you’ll want to follow these therapists on their journeys into private practice!  https://youtu.be/KsAdNX12fhQ

Learning Along the Journey

* Learning about a niche – Lisa believes it is important to identify a niche because 1) it is your strength and b) it is a way to draw clients to you. It is important to engage in self-reflection prior to taking the plunge into private practice to identify your strengths and interests and possible areas in which to specialize.

* Learning about your personality – Lisa perceives herself as an extroverted “go-getter.” She believes that engaging with people/establishing relationships and being willing to sell yourself in an authentic way is important.  Lisa noted that she experiences a little bit of anxiety and has trouble letting things go and waiting for things to happen.  Things are not always predictable in private practice, which can be anxiety provoking for some people.  For example, when clients miss appointments Lisa just doesn’t sit around and do nothing – she looks at this as an opportunity to market her services or do other productive things.

* Learning about fee setting & fee negotiation – Lisa takes insurance and only has a few self-pay clients. She admits that she needs to work on telling (and feel comfortable telling) clients how much her self-pay fee is.  Lisa makes two slots available for reduced-fee clients at any given point in time.  The more that you value your worth as a therapist the easier it is to tell clients what your fees are.

* Learning from other therapists or professionals – Professional Facebook groups have been instrumental in helping Lisa develop her private practice. Listening to the Private Practice Journey episodes with the other therapists has been helpful in that Lisa sees that they are going through many of the same growing pains as her.  Lisa also has a local mentor and suite mate that she can consult with as needed.

* Learning from clients – Lisa has learned some important things from clients that have influenced her work with them. One thing she has learned is that it’s OK not to know everything.
